Thank you so much for a most interesting and informative website. We grow Hoyas in Sydney Australia, at present we have over 100 varieties, many we have to keep in a heated glasshouse during the colder months - but we do not get snow.

  Hi Christina
Shame about the spam idiots. I also became involved with hoyas after my mum passed away in 2000. I lve in Melbourne, Aust and am limited to what will grow in my shadehouse. I can't seem to get my fish tail hoya to flower but will follow your advice. Great site, thanks for sharing.

  Hi Christina,
I love your site. I sent you a picture of my Bella about a week ago. Did you get it? Maybe it went to your spam folder! I have had this plant for about 3 years, it is huge and has about 40 umbels in full bloom right now. The blooms have all of a sudden come, after moving the plant to a southern window. Prior to moving it, I usually got three or four umbels twice a year.

Nice site! I just got 3 small hoyas yesterday - they had no ID, so I used an online plant identification guide to figure it out. I am still not sure which variety I have, but will keep exploring! I think my hoyas will be happy in my ever expanding plant collection! (Mongo is my white bird of paradise = 7 feet tall!)
Thanks

Great site Christina, what a relief to know I am not the only hoya nut in the world!! I have been smitten with their perfume and variations for about 5 years now and find my myself 'hoya less'.

I have just re-located to Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia from the harsh West Coast and would love to be in contact with any hoya collectors in this area with view to swapping information and cuttings etc.

  Hej Christina!

  Hi Christina
I just love your site, very nicely done and your plants are beautiful.
I used to own 2 hoyas that I got when my mother passed away and I killed them both, after 7 years I still feel guilty so I am going to start again, they were both white and I am going to dig out her pictures of the blooms and try to replace them both if I can find them.

Thank you again,
Judy

  Hello Christina
Thanks for a lovely website dedicated to this beautiful flower. I got the plant from my grandmother who gave a cutting to my Mom and then me a couple of years ago (hoya carnosa) and I've had to look for it's name for a while. I finally found it and am planning to order several species from the US (USD 7.50 a cutting). There are so many different types and colors it's just a wonder. This year in spring it was quite hot here in Switzerland and I had more than 20 blossoms. The flat smelled vey sweet :)
Thanks for the beautiful pictures (which I did try to copy so I could use as a desktop) and best of luck with your new adventures - driving and all :)
Ciao
Valentina

Our Hoya Fungii won the Blue Ribbon at the 2008 Rock Island (Illinois) County Fair. It was entered in the 'Hanging basket houseplant grown for blooms' category. It had several blooms on it. Perfect timing! This plant is one of dozens that my father propagated over the years from one owned by my Grandmother. She died in 1966, so the lineage has been ongoing for at least 42 years.

I picked up a nice hanging basket at the hardware store and hung it on my deck outside. After two years, I noticed a cluster of flower buds and was amazed to see the delicate flowers when each bud (about 30)on the stem opened. I had no idea what this plant was but fortunately found a picture of a hoya bella in a houseplant book and then the google search lead me to your site. Thanks for the wonderful pictures. I have a Hoya Arnottiana!

Your website is beautiful! I was referred to you from Univ. of Washington as someone who might be able to help me with my hoya bella (30+ years old). It has over 150 blooms, but somehow I overwatered it and it's shriveling up. I was hoping I could reach you by email, but your email tab doesn't allow it. If you have the time, I would so appreciate receiving your email address. Thank you so much. Anne

Hejsan. / Lena

  Dear Ms. Christina,
my name is Ladislav Kopáček and I’m 37 years old. For some time I’ve been interested in growing plants of the Hoya variety. Recently I came across your internet site MYHOYAS.com. Your collection of these plants is fascinating. I would like to ask a few questions about the possibility of obtaining these specific types and their prices:

H. juannogoiana
imperialis
magnifica
meredithii
megalaster
onychoides

My friend Mr. Radek Solnička,will probably visit Sweden in a few weeks and perhaps could pick them up in person or we can arrange delivery. Of course I can pay for the plants in advance. Please, I would like to know the city where you live so that my friend could pick up the plants if he will be in that part of Sweden.

Thank you for your response, I wish you all your best and lots of luck with your plants.

Sincerely,
Ladislav Kopáček

  Hej!

Enjoying your Hoya history. I'm a senior now living in Michigan. Smuggled through customs hoya cuttings from mother-in-law in Finland many years ago (50!). There's a 'saga' connected to my carnosa, its many cuttings, Finnish folklore that says one must sneak cutting while plant's owner not looking! In any case off- shoots of original have settled in our Koeln, Germany apartment, then followed career to France where it covered (15 years) wide glass (otherwise cold view of concrete balcony) door windows on teakwood trellis husband built. Now on my own and back home still waiting for those fragrant blooms which happen, around here, late summer - october. Landed on your interesting, artistic website while searching for indoor trellis supplies. Glad, at this stage, to be an insomniac! Up most of night 'playing' on computer. Best regards, "hej" from Farmington Hills, Edith

I've had my Grandmother's Hoya carnosa for more than 20 years and just now thought to look to see if there were any other varieties available! What a waste of 20 years of collecting. Oh well! I'm off to the races!

  Hi Kristina,

I enjoyed your website as I have just discovered Hoya sp My elderly neighbours each have one - I think they are different but both are really old plants. I have a cat just like yours. I am a geneticist and I had to laugh - my cat (Andre)has the same markings as your kitten. B/W cats are amazing characters. Love your dog as well. I have to Maltese/shitzu X's - Shanti and Dharma (means in the moment). thanks for sharing. Margie

  Hi there -

A friend sent me your site and I was so pleased to get it. About ten years ago, when my dad passed on in B.C. ( Canada ) I brough my mom and dad's plants home with me to the Yukon Territory ( northern Canada ). I put this beautiful hoya carnosa ( a clipping I orginally recieved from a friend's grandmother I gave to my Mom ) with a cactus in my own home. The Hoya never has produced the flowers ( I like to call them ) that they did when the vine grew near the window at my Mom and Dad's house. I think I need to put it by itself and move it to the window? I wonder, would you think it might like this? I would love to see the flowers bloom again. We do have lovely warm temps and the sun and light is increasing nicely now.... Jacki

Love you're site! I mostly collect Cacti, but now I need Hoyas, you're plants have set me going, but I can't see where you get them from. I suspect some are too expensive for me anyway. But lovely flowers, and I would love to give them a try. Sure they would be OK here in the UK.

I really enjoyed the visit to your website. How strange... I also was introduced to the Hoya by my mother. They were moving and she could not keep her greenhouse so she gifted a lot of her plants my way. She never knew the name of it and neither did I until just a few weeks ago. I think it is either a carnosa or a fungii, but am not sure. One thing is for sure, the Hoya has to be one of my all time favorite plants! Thanks for putting together such a wonderful collection and information. Now I have to get busy!!!

I happen to stumble on to this site trying to find some info. about how to care for hoyas. I purchased a cymbidium on E-bay and was sent two hoyas by mistake. I was allowed to keep them free of charge. I live in northern California and any help or advice is appreciated. I would hate to kill the little cute plants. One is a Hoya Bella and the other is marked Hoya Serpens. By the way, you have a wonderful site. I enjoyed it very much. Maybe one day I'll find time to set one up for all my cymbidiums too. Thanks.

  Christina,
What a wonderful site. I had no idea there were so many varieties of hoya. Here in Australia, the carnosa is very common and mine have come through pest attacks and salt water (from underground in the drought) and they just keep on flowering. I keep mine potbound and in a saucer. In the summer heat I let mine dry out and then water to fill the fairly deep saucer.
However, I stumbled across some plants yesterday that were new to me. That's why I ended up on your site. H Bella I'd been looking for for 20 years, but H Cumingiana, H Lacunosa ans H Pauciflora were all new to me.
I'm aware they're from different parts of the world and may need slightly different care.
Congratulations.

My Hoya is a start from my great grandparents plant brought over 100yrs ago from Finland. Which is still alive today and blooms beautifully.I took my start 25yrs ago and it has never bloomed. My brother took a start from mine 10 yrs ago and it blooms beautifully also. I've restarted mine and it still has never bloomed. I would very much like to have the first start off the original Finish Hoya to bloom and thrive and keep this 100yr old plant to be around in another 100yrs. For sentimental reasons. Thanks for sharing photos of your fabulous hoyas to the world. I have just started my collection (4) and bought them on the internet at Clackamas Orchids in Oregon. The first two that I ordered last year bloomed and smells wonderful! I think they are h. bella and h. lacunosa. The two I ordered and received last week is h. cumingiana and h. serpens. Hopefully the flowers would be as wonderful as my other two. Best Regards from American Canyon, CA!

I love your site. I have had a Hoya Compacta for a couple years, but have never seen it flower. At the end of last summer, I get a cutting from a relative and had no idea what it was. I too turns out to be a Hoya, a Hoya Bella.

I was given one of these plants YEARS ago and did not know what it was called....

I was told it was a Cry Jesus. The Tears of Jesus when it drips. I finally have the proper name for it and can order more of them.

I have given them away to severely friends and they love them dearly.

This is a great site and I will now become a collector of them...THANK YOU AGAIN

I have never had either of my hoya's flower. What do they need to flower?
I was introduced to hoya's by my grandmother she had a hoya with curled leaves in her living room all along the big window. I seem to have a green thumb on other plants such as mother-in-laws tongue and cacti as well as spider plants, but hoya's have never bloomed.

The flower look beautiful from the pictures.

Very refreshing, and beautiful photos of Hoyas in different stages. I am new to starting a collection. I was given a tiny cutting over a year ago, and now it's about 2 feet long, but the main plant is nice and full and deep green. Maybe I need to fertilize it.
I am so anxious to see it's first bloom, as I don't know what type it is! When it blooms, i'll try to send you some photos!!

What a wonderful website, Christina. I feel I know you after having read "about You". I too love cats and have 1 indoors and 2 outdoors. When I was in my teens I had an ill father and stayed close to home to help with things. I became fascinated with plants and acquired a Hoya carnosa which bloomed beautifully. At a recent agricultural fair I saw a Hoya Imperialis for the first time. It fascinated me to where I wanted to learn more about the genus Hoya. That in turn led me to your amazing site. Thank you for making my first learning experience on Hoyas so professional!

I will definitely return to see your new additions from time to time.

May you and yours have good health, long life and much happiness.

  Hi Christina,

I just got interested in Hoyas. I can't tell you exactly why. In someways they are not the MOST beautiful of plants (kind of wild and wire-y) but I am hooked. I had read the blooms have a great smell. I have three hoys now and just saw 4 others at the store. I WILL go get one or two or...(oh well you know how it is when you are obsessed) I haven't ever even smelled one. Just saw the umbel flower blooms yesterday in the store. I love your site. It's very informative and detailed. I learned a lot so far. I will visit often. LOve meeting you and your family.. lovely.

Hi Christina - just dropping by to read up on picta, looked at your cat pictures for the first time - I lost my Daphne, a female, 14 yrs old in 1998 to cancer. Sadly, the time between finding out and having her put to sleep was only a few days, I wish I had known sooner so that I could have tried some treatment or at least let her eat whipped cream!! Still miss her. Your cats -and dog - are beautiful.

I enjoyed my visit very much. I grow a few orchids and I have a backyard full of hostas and other perennials.

Until I visited your site, I had not seen a hoya. Now I must have one!
The egg cup page is very interesting and so I must have some of those, too.
You have a beautiful outside garden and you're a flower lover.

I design web pages and have a website that features photographs taken with my digital camera. Of course, most pages feature pictures of the flowers I grow.

I offer free E-cards to visitors and most are designed using my flowers.

I invite you to visit my site.

Take care Christina . . I'll be back!

  Hi Christina,
Your web site is looking very professional! I wish you would live close by, I would hire you to take pictures of my products. Your pics are so crisp! You have beautifull hoyas.
I brought back a small cutting from Germany in 1979. I got hook to hoya and hydroculture!
I have been collecting for the past 4 years, I did not know that my hoya had relatives until then!
Now I have about 50 or 60, most of them are small. It is so pleasant to watch them grow, they each have their personality.
Keep up the good work!

  Hi there!

Just wanted you to know that over the last year I have probably been on your website 50 times researching hoyas. I come to see what you have, how to take care of them, what I want and to see what one might look like that I've not heard of.

I can't imagine how much time you have put in to this site but I wanted to tell you how informative it is to people like me who know NOTHING.

Thanks!

I am so pleased to find someone who is so knowledgeable regarding Hoyas. I have an old one that I'm trying to identify. I haven't seen it bloom in quite awhile. I just moved it to a brighter place, and need to repot it. Thanks for the rooting info, as I have accidentally broken off a couple of vines. It is so huge, and was all jammed up in one small window. When I originally got it from a professional arborist, it hadn't been moved in 14 years. Mine, of 4, is the only one that survived. I'm trying to root a couple vines in water, and plan to get some fresh rooting hormone in order to try your greeenhouse method. Your greenhouse looks like a clear pitcher with a top, that the pour spout is left open for ventilation. Am I right, or might that at least work? Also, please clarify "burned clay". I'm not sure what you mean. I also have 2 other Hoyas. One I found in a 2nd hand store for $ .50, American. The other is a recent gift from a close and thoughtful friend. (I have no intent to violate your copywrite, yet my memory is so poor (Fibromyalgia) that I printed out the Home page to be sure I didn't lose the location of your site. Please let me know if that upsets you, and I will write the site down and shred what I printed. I promise not to touch your photos. I just want to learn.) When my big Hoya is repotted and arranged, I will try to send an e-mail with pictures of mine. Maybe you will help me identify my mystery one. So very glad to find your site. Thanks!

Loved you web site. I was interested in your hoya plants. My aunt in Louisana (USA) has a plant that looks like yours and has just bloomed. She is not sure what it is. I left to go home the day before it opened. Is it a vine? A stem swooped down and a cluster of flowers was on the end. She says it smells very sweet and after a day or so she doesn't like the smell.
Thanks again,

I enjoyed it very much..East and west windows....
I have two hoyas. One is from my sister in law which is fairly old. I actually gave her a piece from my hoya back then, which I no longer have. I am starting over...

Do you measure out the amount of water you use for watering your hoyas. My large older hoya is dropping leaves, which turn yellow first. I would hate to loose this hoya. It loved my sister in laws window and climate..what do you feel about the maintaining a high humidity for hoyas?

Thank-you for your website

  Hej,

Inger Maryissa

your site is so good and full of beautifull photos.enough for me to get identificatof the few hoyas that I have. I used to have some 50 different hoyas but lost a lot when I transferred to another island.I envy you as you have lots of sources in sweden. here in the Philippines we can't even get those that are native here. hoyas are not popular. anyway happy gardening

You have a great website. I live in Florida and grow orchids, succulents and a few hoyas. I just purchased a Hoya imperialis at a recent plant show and was looking for info on it and found your site. I understand your addiction to them as they are beautiful plants. I am in the process of creating a website for my plants. I find yours very easy to navigate and hope my results are half as good!
