A photo of a hoya was sent to me
some time in April 2005. It was from a man (Fred) in Indonesia, on
Bali. He wanted to know what hoya it was that was growing in his toilet!
He had found a hoya in the wild and taken a cutting home... The
photo was nice and showed the flowers and some leaves and my guess was
that it was a Hoya diversifolia. Curious as I am, I just HAD to ask him
if he could send me some more photos of HOW it was growing. And so he
did... I sort of knew toilets/bathrooms in Indonesia wouldn't exactly look like
the ones we have here... although we don't get to see the whole place in
these photos. I have received a description of the bathroom: "It is
partly roofed, partly open and has a small garden planted in it. It's
about 6 meters long and 8 meters wide. Half of it is roofed, so that you
can do your business when it's raining and not get too wet. The other
half is garden, with a high wall separating it from the rest of the
house compound. That's where the hoya is." |

It was fun to see photos of how
this hoya was growing up the wall on the toilet and aerial roots in
masses! Well, it didn't end there...
Fred actually went out to search for the original hoya to take photos of
it to send me! The two last photos are from the really wild hoya. I
asked if I could use his photos on my website and he said I could. Thank
you, Fred! |

I've now received information
that this hoya should be called Hoya excavata. I hope you enjoy the photos! |
